From the age of 5, children in the Netherlands are subject to compulsory education and may not be absent without a valid reason. You can only request leave with a good reason, the rules for this are strict.
For example, do you want to go abroad outside the regular school vacations for a wedding or other important event? Consult well in advance (officially 8 weeks in advance!) with the teacher or principal. You must also fill out a form for this purpose (also available from teacher/principal).
